Sled dogs pulling an ATV through the Alaskan wilderness during summer

Dog sledding is on everyone’s bucket list when you come to Alaska. Just because the snow may be gone, that doesn’t mean you can’t experience dog sledding in the summer

Instead of a sled and snow, your ride will be in a custom-built 5-passenger side-by-side ATV with a team of dogs training for the race trail.

This pre-season training gives you a behind-the-scenes look at how mushers and dogs prepare for the winter season.

From the moment you arrive on this 2-hour tour, you will be greeted by some "retired" dogs who are happy to get a little scratch behind the ears before you check-in. Afterwards, you'll get a history of dog sledding and then head over to the kennel where you get to meet and play with the entire team.

We're happy to teach you if you want to learn how to harness dogs. From there, we’ll go for a run with the dogs through the woods and over the hills. You’ll be amazed at how strong they are and how they work together. There’s plenty of time for photos and the dogs always appreciate the attention when we get back, for a job well done.

This tour is suitable for people of all ages. Young children must always be accompanied by an adult when they are around the dogs. The dogs are very friendly because they are essentially kids themselves.

Lunch, transportation, and rain gear are provided for this tour.

Technical Tour: University of Alaska Anchorage - Arctic Wave Flume Project Tour
(ticketed event)

Tuesday, May 20, 2025 | 9:00 am – 12:00 pm

$30 ADV / $35 ONS

2.0 PDHs

The Arctic flume is a wave fume for lab testing of Arctic coastal erosion, and strategies for slowing that erosion that is currently being built at the University of Alaska Anchorage. The specific erosion mechanism addressed is thermal abrasion, which involves niche erosion followed by block collapse. The wave flume is about 30 feet long, with a width of 1.5 feet wide. We expect the water depth to be on the order of 6 to 8 inches.

A chiller will control the water temperature. A wedge-style wave maker produces waves that travel to the right and break on a short beach before encountering and eroding a permafrost block. Initial experiments will attempt to determine the dependence of erosion rate on water temperature and wave conditions.

Transportation is provided for this tour.

Technical Tour: William Jack Hernandez Sport Fish Hatchery Tour
(ticketed event)

Tuesday, May 20, 2025 | 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm

$30 ADV / $35 ONS

Participants will transition into hatchery-provided rubber boots to access the bio-secure rearing areas.  Comfortable socks are recommended to wear inside the rubber boots.

Construction of the William Jack Hernandez Sport Fish Hatchery was completed in June of 2011. Located in Anchorage at the intersection of Reeve Blvd. and Post Road, this fully enclosed, recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) based facility uses the best available technology to conserve water and reduce heating demand for the production of Chinook (king) and Coho (silver) salmon, rainbow trout, and Arctic char.

The 141,000 square-foot William Jack Hernandez sport fish hatchery is the heart of Alaska’s sport fish stocking program and the largest indoor recirculating sport fish hatchery in North America.  The facility includes more than 100 fish-rearing tanks to rear over 4 million fish of 5 species. Water recirculation technologies use approximately 5% of the water required in a conventional hatchery allowing the Alaska Department of Fish and Game to meet its’ mission in a cost-effective and sustainable manner. Through integrating the building and aquaculture systems in design significant reductions of energy and water were achieved.

The project received the following awards:

•    Envision Award – Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure - 2013
•    Outstanding engineering achievement, finalist, national – ASCE 2013
•    Engineering excellence awards, national recognition – ACEC – 2012
•    Peg and Jules Tileston Award for Economic Development and Environmental Stewardship – 2010

A unique project of this scale has never been accomplished by any other municipal water system in the United States. AWWU serves the Municipality of Anchorage (MOA) with approximately 20 million gallons of water per day from Eklutna Lake through the Ship Creek Energy Recovery Station.

The new innovative heat transfer system at the Ship Creek facility is able to capture approximately 100 MBTU of waste heat from the electrical generation process that otherwise would be vented to the atmosphere.
